Devoted to the artistic nature of design, Roderick’s creations are a mish mash of when the east and west; of traditional design meets modern technology. Trendspotting sits down with the innovative designer to uncover the man behind the brilliance.
Trendspotting: Who or what inspires you?
Roderick Vos: Often the shapes from nature, especially plant structures. My latest design MOROSUS for design Miami/Basel was inspired by this.
Trendspotting: What is the greatest invention of all times and why?
Roderick Vos: Edison’s light bulb. Beautiful shape & ‘intelligent design’. This icon sadly will disappear, taken over by ugly looking energy saving bulbs.
Trendspotting: What invention would have been better off if it hadn’t been invented?
Roderick Vos: ‘The manhattan project” from 1939; the research that would produce a viable atomic bomb.
Trendspotting: What are the three things you don’t leave the house without?
Roderick Vos: My pen, drawing paper and glasses.
Trendspotting: What was the last concert you saw?
Roderick Vos: Toets Tielemans; timeless music..amazing!
Trendspotting: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Roderick Vos: Expanding my life span/get a little older; I still have so many things I need to create in this life.
Trendspotting: What’s your favourite style of food?
Roderick Vos: Balinese food, maybe because of the long time I spend living in Indonesia, making rattan furniture.
Trendspotting: If you could have dinner with any famous person, who would it be?
Roderick Vos: There’s only one: Ennio Morricone.
Trendspotting: What would you imagine the world to look like in 15 years from today?
Roderick Vos: I don’t dare to ‘imagine’, but the ‘greed’ in general concerns me. However, I’m an optimistic person.
Trendspotting: If you could chose any place to live in the world where would you want to live?
Roderick Vos: New Zealand, although I’ve never been there!
Trendspotting: Is there anything else you want to share with the world?
Roderick Vos: Be authentic!
